Excessive hair loss can sometimes be a problem. Aside from the fact that there could be health implications, it can also create fears for total baldness and may lower self confidence. For men, hair loss seems like a natural thing. There are hormones in men called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that triggers patterned hair loss or androgenetic alopecia.
The extent of baldness in men may depend on heredity and lifestyle. Nevertheless, it is common for them to be bald at the age of forties. Women, on the other hand, face a different case. In women, there is no such thing as patterned hair loss. Most of the causes of women hair loss would be hormonal imbalance during pregnancy, after child birth, or possibly menopause. Other than this, there could be possible hereditary issues and health problems.
Fortunately, there are solutions available to cover thinning hair. There are three basic hair replacement methods to choose from:
1. Hair replacement medication. There are topical medication and oral prescription drugs that are available to treat hair loss. Topical medications are applied to the balding area and may cause hair growth depending on the extent of the problem. If not solved by topical solutions, an oral prescription may be required to treat the problem.
2. Non-surgical hair replacement. This hair replacement method is common as this is the most affordable and safest. This requires devices such as wigs, toupees, and hair pieces. These devices are simply attached to the remaining hair and to the skin in any procedures that makes it look like you had your hair back. The materials may be made up of synthetic fibers or natural hair. Under this method, thinning hair can also be resolved by hair extensions or hair weaving. This procedure creates more dense hair and longer hair.
3. Surgical hair replacement. This is commonly a hair transplant surgery. This is done by getting a donor hair follicle at the back and side of the patients head. The surgeon will then take graft of the follicle at the area where there is thinning of hair. A new hairline is now created. This cause permanent results although the effects of the surgery may linger for few weeks.
Most of the time, balding people have the tendency to choose their own hair replacement method. They sometimes take medications immediately without the recommendation of hair experts. This could sometimes lead to problems as there are pros and cons to each method. Topical solutions, for example may lead to further hair loss if not used properly. Hence, instead of helping out to cover balding head, it caused more loss of hair.
Before choosing your own hair replacement methods, it is best to consult a hair loss expert to know which of the methods will be right for you. This way, he or she can evaluate your case and may recommend other possible treatments for hair loss. In the same way, you can also talk to the expert about your preferred hair replacement method and its expected outcome. This way, you can balance considerations for costs and appearance.
