Good and Bad Weight Loss Plans
Date: Wednesday, March 10 @ 01:01:41 MST Topic: Diet & Fitness
When it comes to diets, I’ve had some experience. Usually, I went the route of the “crash diet,” extreme low calories and as much exercise as I could tolerate, usually for hours. It would work on a temporary basis, but after I stopped the diet, the weight came back, usually with more weight than the original one.
That is typical of all crash diets. There are two major problems with them, and the results will almost always be what I describe above.
The first major problem is that your body goes into “famine mode”. This is an automatic action programmed in to the body. Your metabolism will drop in order to preserve calories, and you may even find yourself slowly gaining weight, as your body fights to keep the fat in order to survive.
The second problem is the end of the diet. Any diet that has a finite end is unlikely to cause lasting change unless the habits that caused weight gain in the first place aren’t broken. Real weight loss requires a lifetime commitment.
The plan that helped me drop sixty pounds involved careful calculation of all calories; both what I consumed and what I burned. We’re fortunate to have the internet, there are some very good calorie counters on-line that can help this effort.
In order to avoid the crash diet syndrome, I had to make sure the calories I consumed weren’t too far below the calories I burned. A ten percent difference is a good goal to strive for.
There are a few other tools that may help you reduce calories without giving up taste available now. These can make the lifestyle change much easier than in previous decades.
Some new food products have been introduced. You can now get mayo with the same number of calories as mustard. That’s great for me as I prefer mayo. The calorie difference? Real mayo: 60 or more per serving, Smart Balance mayo: 10.
My advice to you is that you study what you eat. Then, look for alternatives to some of the least healthy choices. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to make lifestyle choices that can make a real difference in the waist line.
